Know the odds? Now set the hand.

You read variance for breakfast. You know a hot streak from a cold table, and you know what the house takes before the first roll. Sanshui: Poker Puzzle asks for something else. Thirteen cards are dealt, and you set them into three poker hands: a 3-card front, a 5-card middle and a 5-card back. No row may be weaker than the one before it. No bankroll, no house, nothing to wager. Just the read you make and the arrangement you can stand behind.

Dice teach you that every roll stands alone. Cards teach you something stranger: the thirteen in your hand are all you have, and every one of them has to go somewhere. You will weigh a safe middle against a bold back, and feel the pull of the line that is almost strong enough. When an arrangement finally clicks, it clicks loudly.

Setting hands sounds simple until the tokens arrive. Flush and Straight triangles rewrite a row. Adders give a row an extra cell. Blocks stand in your way. Hazard voids a whole row. Spy and Swap turn the table when you least expect it. Every token is another face on the die, and you choose where it lands. The gambler’s question still applies: what will you risk to make the back row stronger?

Some hands need no showdown. The Dragon, the Dragon Flush, Six Pairs, Three Flushes, Imperial Court and many more win outright, each with its own pixel animation. Spot one in your thirteen and the table goes quiet. Imperial Court seats the prince, the empress, the king and the emperor at your table. The dragons, plain, one-eyed, two-eyed and three-eyed, stare you down all the same.

Puzzle runs from level 1 to 100 through the tiers Apprentice, Journeyman, Adept, Master, Grandmaster, Serpent and Twin Serpents, then on into Master Shen’s tier. The deeper you go, the deeper it goes. Timed is the sprint: beat the par for three stars. Presence, your longest unbroken run, is the one number on the leaderboard, so a streak is what counts. Shen gives you a 10-second curse window, then a 35-second battle against Master Shen himself.

Master Shen is the rival who sets his waters against you and curses yours. Around him the game’s world gathers: the Eight Immortals, the Seven Fairies and the Four Heavenly Kings, the phoenix of Phoenix Nest and the koi of Shèng Yàn. You came for the odds. You will stay for the staring contest.
